Memory is a really complex idea in neuroscience – there still isn’t a perfect theory of memory as the Brain is the most complex thing in the known universe.
The basic cell of the brain is called a neuron. There a millions of neurons connected in your brain, that act as electrical wiring. When you do something new and exciting, connections form in parts of your brain – so you remember it later.
If you do something for long time (like learning a language) – the connections get gradually stronger so you remember better.

All brain cells are neurons but different areas, called lobes, of the brain have different functions, such as sight, hearing, speech, limb movement, making memories etc. The area in the brain which is associated with memory is called the temporal lobe. We have 2 of those, on each side of our head, above the ears.

I think the brain is extraordinary. Its you but what is you? What is consciousness? Where does personality come from? Its very complicated and I don’t think anyone really knows. The nuts and bolts are the neurons and it’s the connections between neurons that make the brain work. There must be some sort of storage system, in a computer a series of 1s and 0s on a magnetic drive store information but we can manipulate that relativity quickly, but cell growth takes a relatively long time so how are things stored?

Become a neuroscientist and you can tell me!
