X-ray of a hand
Ever since the first x-ray picture of a hand was taken over 100 years ago, physics has played a vital role in medicine. Physicists have revolutionised medicine and are developing even better ways to diagnose and treat illness that will help save lives and keep us living longer in the future.
The five experts in this zone help patients in a variety of ways. One scientist takes pictures inside patients bodies using a special camera to help find out what’s wrong, one gives people radioactive substances to test them for different conditions and find helpful treatments, and one designs advanced MRI scanners that take images inside our bodies. Another scientist uses pictures of sound moving through patients to help find cancer, and another is learning to use X-ray to kill cancer cells.
